HISTORY:
In accordance with the National Curriculum we look at History through certain prescribed
topics and periods of time. We aim to develop children’s historical knowledge,
understanding and skills of enquiry. At KS1 (in the Infant department) the focus is on
History studies through topics such as “Changes in Lifestyle”, “Famous People” and
special events in history. At KS2 (in the Junior department) the focus is on specific
periods of time or specific cultures eg “Ancient Greece”, “Tudor Times”, “Victorian Britain”.
We aim to ensure that all children cover the expected work set down in the National
Curriculum with a 2 year cycle of study units planned by the staff at both KS1 and KS2.
Throughout the school we use a variety of resources – reference books, the internet, CD
ROMs, photographs, video and TV programmes, stories and artefacts. We also aim to
bring history to life by organising visits as appropriate, and by having visits to school from
theatre groups involving historical presentations.
ART & DESIGN:
The study and practice of Art and Craft plays an important role in many aspects of the
curriculum. We are able to provide the children with opportunities to work with a wide
variety of media. Pupils follow a programme of work which extends and develops their
own ideas and abilities, whilst introducing them to many new skills in the field of 2 and 3
dimensional work.
Skills in drawing, designing and modelling are carefully developed from the Reception
class to Year 6.
Our Art syllabus involves pupils in working with a variety of exciting and contrasting
materials. The pupils are also encouraged to draw and design using the computers.
Pupils work is displayed in a lively and interesting way in the classrooms and around the
school and has the reputation of being of a high standard.
