EXTENDING THE CURRICULUM:
At Brunswick House we are committed to the education of the whole child and are
therefore concerned with far more than just academic achievement. We value the
development of artistic, creative and sporting talents and take an interest in what each
child does out of school as well as at school.
We feel that it is essential for children to have a
wide range of experiences and so we ensure that
there are regular visits from theatre companies,
writers, poets and storytellers. The children also
make visits to castles, farms, museums etc in
connection with the curriculum as first hand
experience is very important. During year 6 they
have the opportunity to participate in a residential
visit.
Each year the children perform in concerts at Harvest and Christmas. These involve
music and drama.
EUROPEAN AWARENESS and MODERN LANGUAGES:
This involves being aware of news items and taking an interest in the European
dimension. In recent years we have encouraged friendship links with schools in Germany,
Austria and France and exchange letters, photographs and other greetings. We welcome
any new possibilities for friendship links. We also welcome visits, from time to time, by
teachers from various countries.
An important aspect is also learning to speak other languages. Our main aim is to foster
enjoyment with basic French. We start an awareness of French at KS1 through simple
greetings, instructions and songs. This is extended at KS2 when simple conversational
French is taught. We also have resources to enable teachers to give children a basic
introduction to German and Spanish, as expertise and timetabling permit.
CHIPOKA
We are very proud of our link with Chipoka 2 Primary school in Malawi. Together with
them, we study similar subjects and then exchange information so each of us learns about
the way of life of the other. This has enriched our curriculum no end.
