RELIGIOUS EDUCATION & COLLECTIVE WORSHIP:
We are required by the 1988 Education Act to base our RE on the teaching and practices
of Christianity and other principal world religions. It is a reminder that education concerns
the whole person, body, mind and spirit and enables children to explore meaning and
purpose in their lives. At Brunswick House we follow the “Kent Agreed Syllabus” for RE.
The children study religious beliefs and practices.
Every day the children participate in an
act of worship. These assemblies are
broadly and mainly Christian but we also
use them to develop moral and social
understanding and an appreciation of the
world around us. Some days we meet
as a whole school and other times the
Infants and Juniors meet separately.
You have the entitlement to withdraw
your child from RE or school worship and
if you have any concerns please discuss
these first with the Headteacher.
PUPILS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:
The Special Needs department helps the children who find problems in their daily school
experiences. These may be learning, emotional, behavioural or physical difficulties. Our
SEN policy is available from the school office if you would like to see it.
If a parent or teacher is concerned about a child’s progress, we try to identify the
underlying problem and the possible causes. This identification and the resulting
assessment and course of action is the accumulation of discussion and co-operation
between the Class Teacher, the Headteacher, the Parents; the school’s Special Education
Needs Co-ordinator. If further advice is required the school may seek the assistance of an
outside agency such as the Speech Therapist or Educational Psychologist. Once we have
identified the pupil’s special needs a programme is designed to suit the child’s individual
requirements. This is called the Individual Education Plan and we value any contributions
made to this by the parents. The purpose of the IEP is two fold. Firstly to address the
child’s specific problem and secondly to suggest ways to help the pupil access the
National Curriculum as fully as possible.
We have many designated areas around the school where individual or group lessons may
take place. However, the programmes are also carried out in every classroom on a daily
basis by the teacher and classroom assistant. Progress is monitored closely and
assessed regularly.
