MATHEMATICS:
Different cultures have contributed to the development and application of mathematics.
Today, the subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally
recognised.
Mathematics is a subject both to use and enjoy. Our Mathematics Curriculum aims to
equip the children with mathematical understanding and numerical skills, which will be a
powerful tool for not only later work and study, but also the needs of everyday life.
At Brunswick House we have embedded the Revised Numeracy Strategy. During Key
Stage 1 our pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics through
practical activity, exploration and discussion. They learn to count, read, write and order
numbers. They develop a range of mental calculation skills and use these confidently in
different settings. They learn about shape and measurement through practical activity,
which builds on their understanding of their environment. Problem-solving is also an
integral part of our maths programme.
During Key Stage 2 our pupils broaden their knowledge and understanding of the number
system. They calculate fluently with all four number operations. They use a range of
mental strategies to tackle problems and develop pencil and paper techniques. Pupils
explore features of shape and space and develop their measuring skills in a range of
contexts. They discuss and present their methods and reasoning using a wider range of
mathematical language, diagrams and charts.
We use a range of resources to provide our children with the best learning experiences.
Work with calculators and computers are included in both key stages. However, mental
strategies and paper-based calculations are regarded as high priority.
