THE CURRICULUM:
The curriculum we provide is in accordance with National Curriculum requirements.
Classroom experiences and work are varied and interesting. They are aimed at
developing understanding in all areas of a broad and balanced curriculum.
The Governing Body and the Local Authority are required by law to ensure that the
curriculum includes the National Curriculum and Religious Education.
The National Curriculum consists of 10 subjects: English, Maths, Science, Design &
Technology, Information & Communication, History, Geography, Art & Design, Music and
PE. Religious Education is also a legal requirement and we also cover Social and
Emotional Aspects of Learning and a foreign language (French).
Cross curricular projects are organised whenever possible to make learning interesting
and relevant to the children.Through structured whole school planning the staff are
developing schemes of work to enable all the children to cover the programmes of study
for each subject area.
Children in the Infant Department are at Key Stage 1 and their progress will be measured
during the summer term of Year 2 through a standardised system of assessment and
testing. Junior children follow programmes of study for Key Stage 2 and they are
assessed through SATs at the end of Year 6.
In addition to the National tests the children are continuously assessed using a
combination of standardised tests and by matching their performance against National
Curriculum criteria. This continuous assessment is essential in order to ensure that each
child is making progress and so that the teachers are able to meet each child’s needs and
set targets for improvement.
Each child is a special individual so the class work is organised so that children who learn
quickly are given more challenging work whilst children who may experience difficulties are
given extra help and work which is suited to their ability.
Research has shown that to learn well we need to keep our bodies and brains hydrated.
Our children all keep a named water bottle on their desks for sipping throughout the day.
We also do ‘brain gym’: brief physical activity sessions designed to stimulate the brain.
