Art and Design – Fine Art (GCSE)
Head of Department: Miss G. Elliott
Art and Design is a course that has a large practical element which will develop your
creativity. It will help you to improve your visual perception and understanding of our
predominantly visual society. You will be equipped with a vast range of practical skills
and the confidence and enthusiasm to apply them to a wide range of materials,
processes and techniques.
You will develop research, experimentation, problem solving and communication skills;
encouraging you to express your ideas and opinions, in visual and written forms. The
skills learnt will enable you to act and think creatively, make independent judgements to
analyse and evaluate your own work and the work of others which is crucial when you
visit galleries and exhibitions as part of your research.
All work completed from the first lesson in Year 10 to the last lesson in Year 11, counts
towards the overall GCSE grade. The GCSE consists of a coursework unit which is 60% of
the overall grade. There is an exam unit which is 40% of the work. This is completed in
the Spring Term of Year 11. The course ends with a 10 hour practical exam in which you
produce a final piece of work.
GCSE Art & Design is essential if you are considering any creative career such as; fashion
design, illustration, graphic design, fine art, editorial photography, print making and
animation. It is the means by which you create a portfolio of work to take to interview
for college and/or a creative based degree at University.
‘Art and Design has helped me to develop innovative ideas and problem solve with confidence. These are skills that I have been able to use in all my subjects.’
