Science – Double Award GCSE
In Year 10, the study of Core Science provides you with the understanding and knowledge of
Science that is relevant to your everyday life. Additional Science, studied in Year 11, builds upon
the knowledge and understanding that you have gained from Year 10. The course helps you to
develop your questioning, analytical and evaluative skills beyond the core practical skills.
25% of each Science GCSE is assessed through coursework, based on planning, making
observations and drawing conclusions. The remaining 75% is assessed with three one hour
written exam papers.
Science helps us understand the world that we live in
and how we can make it a better place. It helps us to
find answers to questions such as, ‘why is the grass
green?’ or ‘can you get sunburn through a glass
window?’ Science encourages us to recognise the
power of rational explanation and develop a sense of
excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.
With everything around us constantly changing,
future generations will need to understand Science
to be able to make important decisions for the good
of the planet.
Most students in Years 10 and 11 at Blenheim
complete a Double Award GCSE in Science, which
consists of GCSE Science (sometimes called core
Science) in Year 10 followed by GCSE Additional
Science during Year 11. If you are interested in a
Science based career, you may also opt to take Triple
Science, presented on the next page. Some of you
may also be offered the opportunity to take a
vocational course in Science as an alternative to
GCSE.
