Maths GCSE
Mathematics is a Core subject and as such is compulsory at KS4. You will
follow the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics course and this begins in the
Summer Term in Year 9. This Linear Course is examined by two written
papers taken in Year 11. There is no coursework to be completed.
Students are expected to have a scientific
calculator (Casio calculator FX-83
or FX-85) for use in lessons and in the examinations.
Tiers of entry for the final exam are Foundation (grades C to G) and Higher
(grades A* to D), you will be placed in the tier most appropriate to your
ability based on your performance at the end of Year 9 and will be
reviewed throughout Years 10 and 11.
There is a strong emphasis on problem solving and the application of
Mathematics. In order to be successful, you will have to demonstrate that
you can select and use the appropriate mathematical methods needed in a
range of situations.
Mathematics is a core curriculum subject and
plays an important role in all other subjects.
By 2016, when new A-level courses are taught
for the first time, all students will need to
display a strong mathematical ability to support
subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
Computer Science, Economics and Psychology
to name just a few. Developing good
knowledge and understanding of Mathematics
at GCSE level will help you if you study A-levels,
go to college, follow an apprenticeship or
secure employment.
Students can get involved
in the UK MT Maths
Challenge
at
senior,
intermediate and junior
levels. We also run the
Jaguar Maths Club for all
ability students to attend
after school each week.
