Resistant Materials – GCSE
Head of Department: Mr. R Blackman
GCSE Resistant Materials covers a wide range of activities based on designing
and making products that are manufactured using materials such as wood, metal
and plastics in many forms. As well as learning practical skills, you will use a
range of industrial processes to shape and form materials into functioning
products. You will be encouraged to innovate and explore the role of the
designer in real life scenarios.
During the course you will also undertake various written and theoretical tasks.
Together, these will enable you to research, design and plan your own practical
pieces. You will need to enjoy the combination of practical and written elements
within Design and Technology. You will be expected to self-manage your own
projects resulting in the manufacture of fully functioning, marketable products.
In Year 11 the final 2 hour examination makes up 40% of your final grade.
Coursework makes up the remaining 60% and takes the form of a controlled
assessment.
A GCSE in Resistant Materials could lead to a career in Engineering, Product
Design, Architecture, Materials Research/Science and many more. Regardless of
your future career, Resistant Materials GCSE can assist you in acquiring a wide
range of skills, such as the ability to analyse, evaluate and prioritise.
Design and Technology teaches an understanding of design, the
application of practical skills, including the use of Computer Aided
Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM).
This is a group of subjects which stimulates the intellect and inspires
creative abilities. It requires a sense of responsibility in preparation
for the ever changing and increasingly technological society of the
21st century. Students are able to select from four disciplines;
Graphics, Resistant Materials, Food and Textiles.
The Technology faculty strongly advise that a student should only
select one technology subject, due to the demands of both the
practical pieces, supporting folder of evidence and final examination
that will be completed to support the overall course grade.
