Computing - GCSE
This GCSE gives you an opportunity to investigate how computers
work, how they are used, and to develop computer programming
and problem solving skills. The computer systems and
programming unit will teach you the theory about a wide range of
issues such as hardware and software, databases, networking and
programming. The practical investigation is all about engaging
with computing in the real world. You will look at a computing
topic in more depth and carry out a practical investigation into a
computing issue. The programming project will call on you to
design, code and test a solution to three tasks using a suitable
programming language.
You will complete the following assessments:
Computer Systems and Programming - 1 ½ hr. examination 40%
Practical Investigation – Controlled assessment 30%
Programming Project – Controlled assessment 30%
The course is an excellent preparation if you want to study
Computing at A-level or work in areas that rely on the skills you
will develop, especially where they are applied to technical
problems. These areas include engineering, financial and
resources management, science and medicine.

health and well-being and connecting people on the move. In the
practical unit you will have the chance to develop your ICT skills,
whilst working with a range of digital tools and techniques.
You will complete a written examination 1 ½ hr. – (40%) and a
Controlled assessment (60%)
ICT is vital in every industry from music and fashion to banking,
sport and health. Students who complete this course will have a
good foundation if they wish to progress to A-level ICT or
combine study with paid work on an Apprenticeship scheme.
Head of Department: Miss D. Smith
I feel like I’m learning something new every lesson which is a good
thing because there is no point coming to school to learn something
you already know.”
-D. Bannerman, Year 10
ICT prepares students to participate in a rapidly changing society in which
work and leisure activities are increasingly dependent on digital
technologies. Students are able to develop an understanding of the impact
of ICT on working life and society and the use of ICT across the curriculum
encourages critical thinking, imagination and creativity, problem solving,
initiative and independence, teamwork and reflection.
“I have enjoyed
learning how to
use the
different
programs and
have learnt a
lot more about
them
.”
- S. Summers
