Special Educational Needs
Children with special needs (SEND) are welcomed into Crawley Ridge Junior School. The
school makes provision for children with learning difficulties, communication problems,
emotional and behavioural difficulties and sensory impairment. Successful inclusion is ensured
by close liaison with parents and professionals in order to ascertain and meet individual need.
The SEN team, which includes teachers and teaching assistants who work solely with the
children who have special educational needs, is led by our SENCo.
At Crawley Ridge Junior School we are committed to the early identification of children with
special educational needs and effective targeted intervention to support them. The School
maintains a list of children with SEND which is regularly reviewed throughout the academic
year.
Class teachers are given information about SEND children in their class at the beginning of the
academic year and liaise with the SENCo to ensure that appropriate provision is made within
classroom activities for each child. Access to the whole curriculum for SEND pupils is ensured
through specific differentiation, support groups and additional adult support.
The school, in line with the Special Educational Needs & Disability Code of Practice: 0-25 2014,
adopts a graduated response in order to help children with SEND access a balanced and
broadly based curriculum, including the National Curriculum. Parent’s knowledge, views and
experiences are highly valued and parents are involved in all stages. For children who need
specific help a SEND Support Arrangements document is drawn up. This document contains
the SMART pupil-centered targets the child is working towards, along with relevant background
information that will help in the support of the individual. This SEND Support Arrangements
document is a working document that teachers, pupils and parents contribute to in order to
achieve the best outcomes for the child. If the School feels it is necessary to consult with other
agencies or professionals, parents are consulted and consent requested before any action is
taken.
We have staff who solely help children with SEN and these are allocated to year groups
depending on the needs.
For children who need specific help an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is drawn up with the
child, teacher and parent.
Copies of the SEN Policy and the whole school provision map can be found on the school
website, as well as the current SEN Information Report.
Disabilities
The nature of our site and building poses some difficulty for those with physical disabilities but
we are pleased to admit pupils with disabilities and special arrangements can be made.
The school has installed disabled toilets and ramps have been created for wheelchair access.
We are an inclusive school and as such we ensure disabled pupils are included in all activities,
including school visits. Whenever we upgrade aspects of the building we take account of the
needs of children with physical and sensory disabilities.
