Perspective Spring 2016 - page 2-3

3
As you will see from the
selection of articles in this
edition, the school diary has
been filled to the brim with
events since September.
Easter has come and gone
and you could say we have
‘scrambled’ the Easter egg
theme with our alternative
take. (I won’t do that again,
I promise). The cover photo
was produced by Katie
Harrison 13H.
Thank you to everyone who
has contributed, including
the ‘Resident Reporters’
who have been busy writing
articles. I am also pleased to
say that I have an additional
new helper, Tal Goodisman
12D, who has taken on some
design tasks for me.
We begin a new feature in
this issue with ‘What is...The
Magna Carta?’ Anisha Mehta
in 9A will enlighten you with
her article on the document
we often hear about. In the
Autumn Anisha will answer,
‘Who is... Michelangelo?’ If
you have any ‘Who is’ or
‘What is’ suggestions for
future editions please do
contact me.

I am delighted with this issue of
Perspective
. It shows the many
varied and exciting developments and events that we have
undertaken.
A good example is our instalment of solar panels on the Sports
Hall roof. I am very grateful to the Governors for their active
support for this project, and to Mr Beasley for seeing it through
against a tight government deadline. As warmer, brighter days
become the norm, we will see the benefit in reduced electricity
costs. A further benefit will be that the girls, in Science lessons,
will be able to monitor the effectiveness of the panels and the
amount of power they produce; the Economists can balance the
profit and loss of the enterprise; Mathematicians can calculate
the power produced by one panel over a given period.
I am sure the ingenuity of the girls and staff will find even wider
ways to incorporate this development into teaching and learning
in other subjects.
As always, the Music Department has been involved in wonderful
concerts involving a large number of girls. I believe our choirs
must be the largest in the area. The music we created jointly
with the Sparrow Schools from Johannesburg was what I grew
up with in South Africa; it brought marvellous, rich memories
and I know the concert was enjoyed by everybody in the packed
audience.
We learnt a great deal during our visit to Rwanda in February
and made a powerful impression with the items we were able
to bring. Thank you to everyone who has been involved with
knitting, providing wool for our baby blankets, and items for
the Mama Packs. This is an ongoing project; I will continue to
work with our newly established Rwandan Working Party to
provide for even more Mama Packs because they really do save
lives. The girls in the working party are planning a fund raising
Knitathon on Saturday 9th July. Look out for details of how you
can get involved.
This is a tough term for students with examinations looming. I
know the girls will be working hard to achieve their dreams and
ambitions, and that we, as parents and teachers, will be working
hard to support them.
