GREAT
VALUE!
It has been an incredibly busy year so far
in the PE department, with 38 teams from
nine different sports competing since
September. We have launched our sports
fixtures website which informs students
and parents of upcoming fixtures and team
lists. You can access the site from the school
website or at
After school and lunchtimes have been busy in the PE
spaces with many students attending sports clubs. We
have been delighted to add cheerleading and golf to the
club programme as well as basketball and Bollywood
dance. After Easter our programme will be changing
to focus on summer sports and we hope to see lots of
students attending. I hope you enjoy reading about the
successes of our teams below.
Netball
The Year 7 Netball squads have been extremely
enthusiastic this year and have been working hard
during training. The Year 7 A-team remain undefeated
in the league and the Year 7 B-team have had some
well-deserved wins. Special mention must go to Maggie
Fleet and Annabel Leach for captaining the teams and
being 100% reliable and motivating.
The Year 8 A-Netball team started the season well with
a 19-4 win over The Reach Free School. Since then
they have gone on to remain unbeaten, with wins over
Bushey Meads School (19-5), Immanuel College (18-7),
Queens’ School (7-4) and a very close win over RMS (7-
6). The team have worked very well together with some
excellent defence by captain Kim Fuller and goal keepers
Rebecca Grant and Hirushi Thenuwara.
The
Year
8
B-Netball team
have also had
a
successful
season, beating
St
Clement
Danes 7-6 in
their first game
of the season.
They went on
to win the next two matches against Immanuel College
and Queens’ School. We then came up against two
very strong teams from Parmiter’s and RMS; the team
worked really hard but ended up losing both games. The
B-team have played very well this year with noticeable
performances from Vaishini Gobinath as goal attack and
Hiruni Thenuwara in wing defence.
The Year 9 Netball squad have had a great season so far
this year, ably captained by Simi Shah and Lucy Wang. After
losing our first match to St Clement Danes in September
the girls have since gone on to beat The Reach Free School,
Bushey Academy, Bushey Meads, St Margaret’s and
Queens’, improving in every game. They narrowly lost to
Parmiter’s 7-4 in a very close fought battle throughout.
The Year 9 girls have been very committed to training and
an absolute pleasure to coach this season. We hope they
will now performwell in their upcoming District and County
Emerging Schools tournaments.
The Senior and Year 11
Netball teams have been
keen to develop their
match play over the season.
Between them they have
had some notable wins,
including the Senior team’s
victory over St Margaret’s
(24-6) and Year 11 defeating
Bushey Meads (21-4). In
the District Tournaments
both teams remained formidable opponents and displayed
real determination and team work to secure their finishing
positions.
A number of our Netballers regularly attend Falcons
Netball Club on a Thursday evening at St.Helen’s School,
Northwood. If your daughter is interested in joining Falcons
NC please contact Miss Dentandt – miss.dentandt@

County Swimming Report 2015-2016
Once again Watford Girls entered all three age groups in
the County Swimming League, fielding full teams in all
events. There were some superb individual performances
led by Charlotte Watson, Emily Presland and Vinnie
Somasundram along with a great team effort. For the fifth
consecutive year every age group qualified for the County
final held at Q.E. Boys! Facing some very stiff opposition
the girls performed their best and finished 4th and 5th in
the Seniors & Inters age groups. Both the Inters & Juniors
were awarded the most improved teams, which we should
be extremely proud of.
Well done and thank you for your commitment girls!
Year 7 County Swimming Success
This year our Year 7 team excelled at the County Swimming
league. After the first gala the team were in first place, due
to some fantastic individual performances. After the final
galawewere placed second, the highest ranked state school
in the county! The team only lost to Royal Masonic by four
points, a fantastic achievement. This is the highest ranking
we have ever achieved since joining the league three years
ago. The reason we were able to accomplish this success is
due to the team who were committed in all their events,
both individual and relays. Let’s hope this achievement can
be built on next year when the team become juniors in the
county league.
The team consisted of: Vinnie Somasundram (captain),
Aaliyah Ansari, Evie Watson, Maggie Fleet, Jess Presland,
Keshini Emmanuel, Sonika Parikh
Dance Masterclass
On the 1st March 2016, 27 students from Years 7-11
attended a Dance Masterclass. The aim of the day was
to bring together students who are talented in a range
of different dance styles to create a piece of dance which
was performed at the Gymnastics and Dance Show. The
stimulus for the day was the Holocaust and students used
various images and pieces of artwork to create phrases
and motifs. Everyone worked incredibly hard throughout
the day to create a five minute powerful, evocative dance
performance, which is a significant achievement. Well
done to all involved.
DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Around a very muddy Aldenham Country Park lake the
school long distance running teams tackled the District
Cross Country Championships. Darting in and out of
puddles and even stopping to help those injured from
other schools, the girls performed well, with most notable
success from Marella Whitfield who came second out of
over 100 competitors in the Senior event. First back for
the school in the Year 7 event was Maggie Fleet, in Year 8
Sarah Nabney, in Year 9 Charlotte Watson and in Year 10
was Eleanor O’Mahony. Well done to all those involved.
Maggie Fleet, Keshini Emmanuel, Sarah Nabney, Amelie
Graham and Marella Whitfield were also selected to
compete in the County Cross Country Championships held
at a very muddy Verulamium Park on the 23rd January.
It was a very tough race for all the students and they did
extremely well! Well done, girls.
