A Day Out at the Barbican Centre
On Tuesday 12
th
February a group of Year 9 and 10 Product Design students visited The Charles and Ray
Eames Exhibition at the Barbican Centre in London.
Charles and Ray Eames were two of the most important designers of the 20th Century. Their work is
iconic and they are renowned for their experimentation with plywood. Early work focussed on the
design and manufacture of affordable furniture; however, they also worked on architecture, film and
media projects in their later lives.
The outing started with the usual tube journey into central London, and once we arrived at the
Barbican we took a short walk to the centre, where we checked out the architecture. The development
is classed as a Grade II listed building and also known as one of London’s best examples of Brutalist
architecture. It was developed from designs by architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon as part of a
utopian vision to transform an area of London that was left devastated by bombing during the Second
World War.
During our visit we were given the chance to walk around the galleries before our guided tour. This
gave us the opportunity to appreciate the iconic designs and really learn about the way in which
Charles and Ray Eames approached design. They seemed to be very interested in different cultures and
took advantage of new materials and technology to create design that is just as relevant today.
Our tour of their work was very informative. We observed in detail how talented and inspiring this pair
were to the design world around them. Their famous animated film called ‘The Power of Ten’
encouraged children to have a more positive attitude to Mathematics and they also created media and
musical installations on a grand scale. We thoroughly enjoyed this trip, as we were given the
opportunity to expand our knowledge of different designers and learn about significant design - all of
which will ultimately help us in our upcoming plywood project.
We would like to thank Mrs Brewer, Miss Chan and Mr Cattini for accompanying us on the trip and for
giving us the opportunity to experience the works of such influential product designers.
