Watford Grammar School for Girls Autumn 2016 Perspective - page 2-3

From the perspective of current
politics, education, industry and
sport it can be argued that we are
heading towards a woman’s world.
With inspiration ranging from our
very own Olympic Gold medallist,
Paracanoeist Emma Wiggs to
Women in the Railway Industry, the
girls can see the opportunities that
are open to them with hard work
and determination.
This issue particularly reflects a
science theme; prevalent from
last year to this. The cover was
designed by Mikhela Treon 11F.
Mikhela based her work on Gail
D’Almaine’s Science photographs.
In September our Senior Speech
Day guest speaker was Sue
Sissling, Director at the Centre for
STEM Education at the University
of Hertfordshire. A few weeks
later the Maths and Science Sixth
Formers were given a presentation
by WGGS alumnae Claire Restarick
on her iGEM project involving
the genetic make-up of cells. In
addition to all of this, we have
articles from all three of the Science
departments.
I am also delighted to report that I
amsuccessfully gathering a band of
additional assistants to ensure that
we capture more of the events that
take place throughout the school
year. In addition to Beth Read,
AnishaMehta and Lillian Passmore,
two more volunteers have come
forward to write articles, so keep
an eye out for work from Sofie
Gajendra 12H and Hajra Hassan
12G. Sofie and Hajra are also keen
photographers and will be working
with Katerina Markogiannopoulou
12E and Aaliya Kapoor 12I on the
photographic team and finally,
Tanya Kansara 12F has been
assisting with photoshop.

elcome to the latest edition of
Perspective, our school magazine. This
edition looks back at the highlights of the
past few months as well as highlighting some
important events that are taking place this
term. It is, of course, a very exciting edition for
me, as it is the first Perspective to be published
during my tenure as Headmistress. You will
find within its pages an ‘interview’ of sorts –
the girls sent me questions in the holidays and I
wrote my answers. From the range of questions I received I could tell
that Watford girls were going to be intelligent, curious, reflective
and also very funny. My first few weeks here have proven this to
be true.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the fascinating articles written
by the girls and staff about school visits, people they have met
and ideas that attract them. It is very good to see that the girls
are so engaged in their study of STEM subjects, but also to see the
range of other topics and contributions here, from a very moving
and profound article about a visit to Auschwitz to the inspiring
poetry of the school’s own poets laureate. The manifesto of the
Art Department is definitely worth a read – the range of creative
artistic pursuits available to the girls is truly awe-inspiring.
The rich variety of topics covered in this edition skim the surface
of all that is going on here at school. I am certain that the editor
had an extremely difficult time selecting which articles to publish.
The girls here are always busy, not only with their school work, but
with focusing on charitable activities, preparing for competitions,
taking part in clubs, practising for concerts, matches and drama
productions, as well as enjoying each other’s company. It is the sense
of calm yet bustling activity permeating the school that assures me
that the girls are not only taking advantage of many of the extra-
curricular opportunities on offer but also that they are enjoying
themselves whilst doing so.
My thanks go to all those who contributed and to the editor who has
brought everything together to make it all happen, and, in addition,
to those behind the scenes: the teachers who plan and run the trips
and coordinate the clubs and societies and the older girls who work
with the younger ones to bring out their potential and help them
to try new activities and find new passions, as well as providing
outstanding role models at the top of the school. Please make time
to read the magazine from cover to cover – you will find within
it humour, pathos, burgeoning talent and evidence of boundless
energy and enthusiasm. Enjoy!
