Sports Day 2016
The sun shone brightly on Friday 8th July for our annual
Sports Day held at Woodside Stadium. Students
arrived brightly dressed in their form colours ready to
participate in a range of athletics events throughout
the day. Two records were broken on the day, both
in the shot put with Maisie Elliot 11F throwing 9.64m,
breaking the previous record by over 2 metres. Zena
Aderogba 8F threw 8.14m breaking the previous
record of 7.96m. The traditional charity mile was also
completed by all students and over £800 was raised
for the Rwanda Sisterhood Mama Pack appeal.
National Schools Athletics
Competition
This year we had 2 students
who were selected to compete
at the National Schools
Athletics Championships on
the weekend of the 9th July in
Gateshead. Taia Tunstall 10F
was one of 19 competitors
in a very strong U15 discus
competition. Taia threw a
massive 31.31m and finished
in second place which is a
fantastic achievement.
Marella Whitfield 13J also competed in the 1500m
Steeplechase. This is a particularly challenging event
and Marella finished in a time of 5 minutes 07seconds,
putting her in 5th place. Congratulations to both of
the girls who competed.

District Rounders
It was a dreadful Summer Term, weather wise, with
only the Senior Rounders tournament able to take
place. Our team consisted of girls from Year 11 to U6
who had to play in a variety of positions.
After playing 5 matches, Watford Girls were overall
runners up to Haberdashers’ after losing a very close
match to them in the tournament. Well done to all
those involved.
SKY SPORTS
On Saturday 7th May, 11 girls took part in their first
Parkrun in Cassiobury Park. These girls were members
of the Sky Sport for Living group who had been
training for their first 5 kilometre run since October.
Lesley Owusu, who is the World Masters Indoor 400m
champion, was our athlete mentor. Lesley was hugely
inspirational at motivating the girls and encouraging
them to fulfil their potential. Congratulations to all the
girls who completed the challenge!
Athletics Masterclass
On Thursday 16th June a group of 20 students were
invited to attend the athletics masterclass. We were
very fortunate to have four national athletics coaches
spend one hour with the girls in each of their specialist
areas including, long jump, sprinting, high jump and
hurdles. The girls were taken through a series of drills
to enable the coaches to analyse their technique and
provide them with feedback to help improve their
performance in each activity.
TENNIS - Olivia Harrison 9A
This season has been a very successful season for
all the tennis teams., especially the U13s who were
the overall runners up in the Aegon championship
and 5th at Queenswood. We managed to win our
first match of the year against Edge Grove, winning
12-0 overall. We moved on to beat Berkhamsted in a
nerve-wracking tie break, thankfully Sarah and Niya
managed to win 10-4 meaning the final score was a
narrow 7-6. We then progressed to the match against
Haberdashers’ Girls and a win left the result of 10-2
to us! Going into the final match, deciding if we went
through to the semis was definitely one of the hardest
matches. We played Queenswood Tennis Academy
and beat them 8-4 meaning we were through to the
semi-finals. Our match against St. Albans High was
played at Habs’ Girls where we beat the team 10-2.
Next came the final… Watford Girls vs RMS. A tough
match where we narrowly missed out on the title.
Later on in the season, Sarah and I had the opportunity
to go to Queenswood Academy to play in their annual
tournament. Schools from all over the county arrived
to play including schools such as Kimbolton, Bancroft,
Bedford and Wycombe Abbey. Eight matches later
we were exhausted but pleased to find out that we
had been placed 5th.
This year the U14 tennis team also managed to have
a winning streak. They played schools such as St.
Margaret’s and St. Joan of Arc. On behalf of all
the tennis teams, I would like to thank Mrs Chapman,
Mr Fry, Mr Burns and all the PE staff for the amazing
support.
After a very successful 2015/16 season the PE department is raring to go with
the school’s winter sports teams and fixtures. We have a number of sporting
opportunities for the students again this year, combining team training with a
range of recreational activities including cheer leading, badminton and table
tennis. We will be continuing to use our sports fixtures website to publish team
lists, fixture information and results. This can be found at:
