A LEVEL BIOLOGY “Biology is the most powerful technology ever created. DNA is software, proteins are hardware, cells are factories.” Arvind Gupta Biology is the studyof lifeandof livingorganisms. What is life?Howdoweprotect it?Howdoorganisms survive at the molecular, cellular and anatomical levels? What is the ecological interrelationship that one organism has with another? What evolutionary patterns are associated with organisms? These questions are important to all living creatures. Studying biology at Sigma Sixth allows you to explore the varied world of the life sciences, the development of practical skills within a laboratory setting and apply knowledge to reach conclusions to important questions. CURRICULUM STATEMENT Throughout the two years you will complete 6 modules: • Module 1: Development of Practical Skills in Biology • Module 2: Foundations in Biology • Module 3: Exchange and Transport • Module 4: Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease • Module 5: Communication, Homeostasis and Energy • Module 6: Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems Assessment consists of three exam papers: • Biological processes; Assesses content frommodules 1, 2, 3 and 5 • Biological diversity; Assesses content frommodules 1, 2, 4 and 6 • Unified biology; Assesses content from all modules (1 to 6) There is also a practical endorsement associated to the course. COURSE CONTENT Students need to have achieved a minimum of 6 grades 5-9 incl. English and maths and a minimum grade 6 in the chosen science. ENTRY CRITERIA
