BTEC LEVEL 3 ART & DESIGN “Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risk, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun” Mary Lou Cook Design is all around us. From the very first moment of each day we continually experience design. From the wake-up alarm, the cosy duvet, the comfortable bed or the carpet underfoot. Everything that is not natural is designed. This course aims to teach students the art and design process by delving into the art world to discover inspirational artists anddesignerswhohave sharedbothexpressive thoughts and functional outcomes. Students will be encouraged learn to think creatively and independently, with a focus on developing problem-solving abilities and fine-tuning skills such as hand-eye coordination and communication. The course will stretch creative minds leading to fresh ideas. Students manage their own design projects looking at areas such as architecture, furniture, lighting, interior design and much more, creating an electronic portfolio detailing the design process journey. Students are encouraged to build confidence and develop skills in new technologies such as 3D printing and laser machining. Final outcomes are built by the students through a range of experimental processes prior to their final build in a fully equipped workshop, prior to presentation in an end of course exhibition. CURRICULUM STATEMENT Throughout the two years students will: • Produce two electronic portfolios of design and making work showing their journey through solving a design problem. • Model and build a variety of ideas that solve design problems. • Develop skills in computer aided design and manufacturing. • Gain the ability to analyse art and design work looking at formal elements, visual language and communication. • Develop communication skills through drawing, writing, modelling and verbal communication. COURSE CONTENT Students need to have achieved a minimum of 4 grades 4-9 incl. English and maths and have achieved a minimum grade 5 or equivalent in an art or technology related subject.
