Sigma Sixth Tendring Course Guide

A LEVEL MATHEMATICS “Mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas” Einstein Mathematics is the language of the universe. It is fundamental to our understanding of the world, and is the base on which all modern technologies are built. Without millennia of mathematical discovery, there would be no world like the one we live in today; no trade, no cars, no phones and no internet. Mathematics provides us with the language to understand, mold and predict the world around us. With mathematics we can launch satellites into space, optimize production lines, design microchips for phones and computers and model climate change. Studying mathematics at Sigma Sixth, you will gain an insight into the skills and methods that mathematicians use tomodel and predict real world events. Puremaths will provide an understanding of topics such as calculus, series, functions and geometry. Mechanics and statistics will take these ideas and apply them to the world around us. Students who achieve an A Level in mathematics typically find themselves in high demand in the workplace and will go on to earn above average salaries. Careers could include finance, engineering, medicine and science, to name just a few. CURRICULUM STATEMENT • Two thirds of the course will be examined on pure mathematics, and one third on the applied units - Mechanics and Statistics. • We follow the Edexcel course, and it is 100% based on three examination papers at the end of year 13. COURSE CONTENT Students need to have achieved a minimum of 6 grades 5-9 incl. English and maths and a minimum of a grade 6 maths. ENTRY CRITERIA
